Holding Yourself Accountable In Recovery

There are a lot of misconceptions about the value of going through treatment for drug or alcohol addiction. Far too many people believe it’s the end-all solution to their addiction issues. Unfortunately, that belief could not possibly be further from reality.

The benefit of going through the addiction treatment process is twofold. First, it allows the client to clear their system of drugs/alcohol while learning the truth about their addiction issues. Based on learning that truth, the client gets a chance to develop better-coping skills, which should help them avoid relapses in the future.

Second, treatment serves as a marker for the beginning of sobriety. What happens after treatment depends on how the client applies what they learned during the treatment process.

Challenges You May Face After Rehab

Depending on the length and depth of your addiction, you might have forgotten how to live life without depending on your substance of choice. That’s a scary feeling. However, this is something you have been working towards since the moment you decided going through rehabilitation was the right thing to do.

One of the challenges you will face as you try to maintain your sobriety is not allowing yourself to forget where your addiction took you. You likely entered rehab with your life in disarray and now, you have a chance to start your life anew. 

The other challenge you will face is maintaining accountability for all of your actions. While in the throes of addiction, being under the influence was probably your excuse for your bad behaviors. By removing the substance from the equation, there is an expectation you will be able to stand on your own. That means replacing bad behaviors with good behaviors and being responsible for your actions.

How to Maintain Accountability

As you contemplate how to move forward in your recovery, you need to accept one important truth. You are a recovering addict. Remember, there is no cure for the disease of addiction. The best you can hope for is to subdue your disease and maintain your sobriety.

Upon leaving addiction rehabilitation, the facility’s administrative staff should have offered you information about aftercare resources. We are referring to aftercare resources like:

  • Living in a sober living environment
  • Participating in 12 Step meetings
  • Attending additional post treatment counseling sessions
  • Participating in rehab facility alumni programs and events

All of these are great aftercare options. Also, they all have one important thing in common. They all involve the participation of other parties who will serve as your support resources.

Ultimately, you must accept full accountability and responsibility for your actions moving forward. However, you do not have to be alone in your recovery. There are people and groups out there that will help you stay sober every step of the way.

The Sober Living Option

Sober living homes are ideally suited for people who are new to recovery. You probably feel good about completing rehabilitation treatment. That doesn’t necessarily mean you are ready to return home and face familiar triggers and responsibilities. If you need more time to adjust to life as a sober person, sober living is the place for you.

The time you would spend in a sober living home offers you great benefits. First, the environment and rules should help you create more structure in your life. That would help you become a more responsible individual. 

Second, it would allow you to build new relationships with people whom you have much in common. You can never have too many support resources. 

Finally, it gives you more time to physically and mentally recover from your bout with the disease of addiction. The truth is there is no downside to participating in a sober living program.
